In this Time Worn Watches post, we are going to look at 5 reasons to wear an antique watch. With the advances of modern technology, everyone seems to be wearing a smartwatch or simply relying on the clock on their smartphone, everyone that is except me. Not so long ago, I was shopping for a new mobile phone. The first thing the saleswoman asked was “what type of smartwatch do you have?” She seemed quite surprised when I showed her the Mappin Campaign watch on my wrist.
A smartwatch is a type of wearable computing device that is typically worn on the wrist and shares similarities with a traditional wristwatch. However, in addition to telling time, a smartwatch can perform other functions such as running apps and recording vital signs like heart rate. Modern smartwatches often have a touchscreen interface for easy daily use. They are typically linked with a smartphone for additional functionality. The data from the smartwatch can be shared via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile networks.
People seem to think that traditional watches are becoming of less value for us to carry around on a daily basis. This is certainly not true; watches are timeless pieces that will forever be a part of our lives. So here are the 5 reasons why you should wear a mechanical watch, in particular an antique watch.
Antique watches do not rely on electricity or network connections. In a power cut or when your smartwatch battery dies, all you are left with is a lump of plastic on your wrist. There is no such problem with a mechanical watch. Aside from the obvious need for the mechanism to be wound, they are an incredibly reliable piece of timekeeping equipment.
Simple and easy to use, good antique watches are not difficult to read However, they have incredibly interesting and complex mechanisms working beneath the surface of the enamel dial. They tell the time and sometimes the date, but have no unnecessary distractions to impose on the beautiful watch face.
Traditional watches are convenient, meaning there’s no need to rummage around for your smartphone. Located on your wrist, they are always available right by your side. They can help to keep you punctual, and time aware and aid you in building a routine through their timekeeping abilities. They are also a subtle way of glancing at the time, with a flick of the wrist, to keep to a schedule, particularly for business purposes.
An antique watch can be a reflection of someone’s personality and is often considered a statement of style and self-expression. You can learn a lot about a person by the watches they wear. Pieces such as antique pocket watches may be a sentimental piece with links to family history. Alternatively, it may be an item from a treasured collection of timepieces.
Traditional antique watches are a statement of craftsmanship. They are incredibly intricate and complex. Using technology which has been around for well over 150 years. They are a piece of mechanical art worn for all to see. Over the years we have seen some astonishingly beautiful examples of such fine craftsmanship from antique items to vintage timepieces. The beauty of traditional watches devices is truly astounding. They have character, they are not just a lump of plastic and as they age they tell a story. Therefore it’s time to put away the smartphone and wear something stylish and antique.
