With the advances of modern technology, everyone seems to be wearing a smartwatch or simply relying on the clock on their smartphone, everyone that is except me. Not so long ago, I was shopping for a new mobile phone. The first thing the saleswoman asked was “What type of smartwatch do you have?” She seemed quite surprised when I showed her the Mappin Campaign watch on my wrist.

A smartwatch is a type of wearable computing device that is typically worn on the wrist and shares similarities with a traditional wristwatch. However, in addition to telling time, a smartwatch can perform other functions such as running apps and recording vital signs like heart rate. Modern smartwatches often have a touchscreen interface for easy daily use. They are typically linked with a smartphone for additional functionality. The data from the smartwatch can be shared via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile networks.

People seem to think that traditional watches are becoming of less value for us to carry around on a daily basis. This is certainly not true; watches are timeless pieces that will forever be a part of our lives. So here are the 5 reasons why you should wear a mechanical watch, in particular an antique watch.

Antique watches do not rely on electricity or network connections. In a power cut or when your smartwatch battery dies, all you are left with is a lump of plastic on your wrist. Therefore it’s time to put away the smartphone and wear something stylish and antique.
